Carlos and Sandy Rios

Carlos' story:

Carlos was born in Colombia, South America into a very strong Catholic family. His father wanted him to become the priest for the family. But at the age of 21, Carlos went to the States for further education and through a Bible study that his uncle attended he came to know Jesus as his Savior.
Later he went to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico for 7 summers on short term mission trips with his home church. During this time, at a missions conference in Atlanta, GA, he felt that the speaker’s words described him: “Many are willing to go, but planning to stay.” The Lord put the desire in his heart to go into full-time missions and he attended Columbia Bible College in South Carolina (currently CIU) to prepare.
Carlos met his first wife, Genie Tindall, a TEAM MK from Venezuela, at CIU and they went to Mexico in 1990. They were planting a church in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, when Genie died very suddenly of spinal meningitis on Thanksgiving Day, 1994. Carlos returned to the home office with his two daughters, Ana and Raquel, to live with his in-laws. Later he was introduced to Sandy from the TEAM Japan field. They married and returned to Mexico in 1997. Together they helped with a church plant in Ciudad Constitución for a year and a half.  Then in 1999 they started the Cabo Community Bible Church in Cabo San Lucas.
In 2011 they turned the church over to a young Mexican who was saved in their church. After attending a Bible Institute, he returned as the youth pastor and then felt called to pastor the church. What a joy to see the church in the hands of nationals, healthy and vibrant, continuing to grow and reaching others with the Good News of salvation!
In 2012 they moved to the mainland to start a new church in Guadalajara. In March of 2020 their small church family became part of the “Divine Dimensions” project of one of the pastors of the Bible Churches in Guadalajara. This pastor has the goal of starting a new church plant in each of the 7 municipalities of Guadalajara.

Sandy's story:

Sandy grew up in New Jersey in a non-Christian home, but her grandfather often prayed for her salvation. A cousin invited Sandy and her 3 older brothers to Vacation Bible School every summer of her childhood. In her junior high years, a classmate invited her to attend an after-school Bible Club for children that a BCM missionary taught. There she heard Bible stories for the first time and began to memorize Scripture. The last year that she could attend VBS, there was a new pastor and he invited her to attend church. It was there at the age of 13 that Sandy became a follower of Jesus.
Shortly after that, she dedicated her life to become a missionary since her pastor and her church were very missions-oriented. When the pastor gave a call for full-time Christian workers her response was, “Since the Lord gave His life for me, I can give my life to help others know Him.” During high school, she had her first short-term missions experience in the mountains of Kentucky.
To prepare to become a missionary she attended Philadelphia College of Bible (now Cairn University). While at PCB, her first cross-cultural experience was studying at the Institute of Holy Land Studies in Israel for a school year. PCB had annual missionary conferences that introduced her to TEAM and later at an Urbana Missions Conference she applied to TEAM.
Sandy went to Japan in 1982 and spent 13 years working in church planting ministries. In 1995 Sandy returned to TEAM Wheaton on medical leave and was introduced to Carlos. That’s when she changed from the Bullet Train to the Bullet Donkey, marrying Carlos, adopting Ana and Raquel and beginning ministry in a new country – Mexico.

Family:

Husband: Carlos, Wife: Sandy
Two daughters: Ana (married to Mark) and Raquel (married to Nathanael)
Four grandchildren: Sunny, Alex, Sophia and Suri

Ministry Focus:

Carlos and Sandy start and establish churches of believers in Jesus, leading people to KNOW CHRIST, to GROW IN CHRIST and to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN. They have a passion for sharing the gospel of Jesus with whoever the Lord puts in their path and seeing Mexicans saved and becoming part of God’s family, the local body of believers. They love to disciple new believers, to see them using their gifts in the body of Christ and to see them sharing the Gospel with others. Carlos serves by evangelizing, preaching, teaching, discipling and training leaders. Sandy serves in women’s, children’s and music ministries. They love to counsel together and work as a team in growing the church.

The People:

Their church plant is in the “Circle of Silence” which includes 6 states in mainland Mexico where less than 2% of the population are believers in Jesus Christ. Catholicism has a stronghold there, and they are shining the light of salvation through faith in Jesus, helping people get set free from the Kingdom of Darkness and become part of the Kingdom of Light.

Primary Prayer Request:

Pray for prepared hearts and much fruit as their church works in a new location in Guadalajara.
Would you like to join them as part of their church planting team?
