Meet Our Missions Place Site Managers

It’s an exciting time at TEAM! Our first Missions Place, located in Maryville, Tennessee, turned one year old in July. Our second Missions Place, located in Wheaton, Illinois, is right behind with a birthday this week, and a third Missions Place in Grapevine, Texas is expected to open this fall.

Our Missions Places are all about community and connection. These spaces serve as a bridge between our everyday world and the “missions” world, bringing people and communities together to learn about what God is doing across the globe. (Read more about what a Missions Place is here!)

Behind every great event, every exciting conversation, and every new connection made, a Missions Place Site Manager is working diligently to bring their communities together. It takes a special person to run a Missions Place, and TEAM has been blessed with two outstanding Site Managers who welcome visitors, embrace their community, and make some pretty good coffee. We want to introduce you to the incredible people who play a part in the daily success of the Missions Places.

Let’s meet them!

Maryville, TN

“The beauty of Missions Place is that it cultivates the community and conversation that we crave.” -Katie

“The beauty of Missions Place is that it cultivates the community and conversation that we crave.” -Katie

A Georgia Peach through and through, Katie graduated from The University of Georgia in 2014 with degrees in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing.

Katie is a social gal – her background is in social media and social enterprise – and she has found ways to fuse her interests in fashion and marketing with her overseas ministry. While at UGA, she studied in Ghana and facilitated a retail trade program between Ghanaian designers and stateside boutiques.  Katie was also privileged to cofound a women’s sewing cooperative that teaches sewing skills to marginalized women. Before coming to TEAM, she spent a summer developing digital strategy for Invisible Children in San Diego, CA.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at the Missions Place?

Katie: When I am not at Missions Place I am cooking with friends, getting lost in Knoxville, and digging through the internet for funny GIFs. (Sometimes the last one happens at Missions Place, too).

Tell us about an experience overseas that has made an impact on you.

Katie: I had the opportunity to study retailing in Ghana. The designers I connected with changed the way that I think of “the developing world” and why ethical buying matters.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Katie: “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search things out.” Proverbs 25:2. I am a question asker, so it encourages me that God is pleased with my seeking, not my knowing.

Wheaton, IL

“The Missions Place is such an out-of-the-box and bold, brave new venture.” -Melissa

“The Missions Place is such an out-of-the-box and bold, brave new venture.” -Melissa

During high school in Phoenix, AZ, Melissa became passionate about understanding the role of the Christian and the local church in global issues of injustice and poverty. After graduation, this eventually led her to spend a year working on community development projects in small villages in Botswana and South Africa before pursuing her degree in Intercultural Ministries and Communication Studies from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL.

Prior to joining TEAM, Melissa worked as a family ministries intern for her home church in Scottsdale, AZ, as well as a U.S. Programs intern for Blood:Water Mission in Nashville, TN. Melissa loves seeing the gospel manifest itself in tangible ways around the world, and loves being a part of an organization that utilizes creative and innovative ways to make that happen (the Missions Place being just one example).

What’s your favorite thing about working at the Missions Place?

Melissa: Getting to interact with so many individuals, churches, and ministries in the area who are experiencing the mission and vision of TEAM in a completely new way.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at the Missions Place?

Melissa: I love doing anything with friends, but I also enjoy exploring downtown Chicago, trying good food at new restaurants, interior decorating, DIY projects, cooking and baking, and watching almost any sport…but especially football. Go Bears!

If you could travel anywhere new in the world, where would you go?

Melissa: I would love to visit Greece. Mostly because it just looks unbelievably beautiful. And, surprisingly, I’ve also always wanted to go to Savannah, Georgia! Maybe Katie can take me sometime…

If you live in the Knoxville, Chicago, or Dallas areas, we’d love for you to stop by and check out our Missions Places! Melissa and Katie will greet you with open arms and a delicious cup of coffee, show you to a comfortable place to sit and chat, and gladly provide more information on our current ministry areas around the world. You can find more information here, or by contacting them below. We hope to see you soon!
